Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries
Style framing, Motion Graphics
November 2024 – January 2025
Motion graphics and animation can come in many different styles. For this video I worked on with the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries, I had the pleasure of using two main animation styles to help bring the Defence Matters video to life. This explainer video was meant to help emphasize the importance of Canada's defence sector and what more funding in this sector can do for the Canadian economy and the lives of Canadian
At the discovery portion of the project, CADSI had already identified a look and feel that they wanted to emulate in the video. This style was a mixture of collage-based and shape animations. Being able to discuss style and pacing at the beginning of the project made the planning and initial style frame designing seamless. In this phase, I could identify what textures, photos and other brand assets would be needed for the video.
With the final style frames created, I compiled them into an animatic with the draft voiceover and music track to help set the pace and timing of all the scenes.

With the approval of the animatic after a few small changes, I was able to get started on video production. With a mix of cel animation and multiple motion graphics techniques, I was able to create the main transitions and scenes of the video. This video used a lot of layering- between the photo assets, adjustments layers and texture effects, I was able to emulate the desired look and feel the client was looking for, while also making it work with the content of the video. My favourite part of building this video was being able to test out Clip Studio Paint's animation feature for building the cel animated transitions.
Overall, the process for the video was very seamless, and I'm very pleased with the final product. The video was also very well received in the community, sparking conversation around the topic. To learn more about CADSI's advocacy work on the subject, click the link below.
